The On-Ramp approach

If like many of us, you’re noticing that you’ve stopped doing some of the things that help you feel good, you might find taking the approach of building a gentle “on ramp” to begin, or return to, useful habits.

In practice this might mean:

  • Starting with doing the thing for less time, or in an easier way, and gradually building up over time (eg if the habit you want to form is a 30 minute walk most days, start with a 5 minute walk each day and slowly increase from there)
  • If there are multiple habits you want to start or get back to, just pick one to begin with and don’t worry about adding anything else until you’ve got some momentum with the first thing

It’s also worth remembering that you can take this approach as many times as you need to – just being a person is hard, and sometimes we go off course – but we can always start a new on ramp to get back to the things that help us feel good.
