When people come to me wanting to start a fitness routine and build consistency, three of the key areas we address are scheduling, strategies and support. Whether you’re hiring an online personal trainer or doing it yourself, I’d encourage you to have a think through what it is that you need in each of these three categories. Some example questions you might ask yourself include:
Scheduling
Would I do better with regularly scheduled movement times or just fitting things in on the fly?
Is there a time of day that naturally feels best for me?
Is it easier for me to stick to a schedule if my appointment is with someone else (fitness class, walk with a friend etc)?
What does my existing schedule actually allow for, realistically?
Strategies
How am I actually going to go about building fitness?
Is trying to find the perfect workout getting in the way of me actually doing a workout at all?
What helps me be consistent in other areas of my life?
Have I got a contingency plan for lower energy days, when life gets busy etc?
Support
What support do I need from the people in my life in order to make this happen?
Do I need to get some advice from my healthcare team?
Where can I go to get information?
What would be encouraging?
Is there any equipment or modifications that would help make the movements I want to do more accessible for me?
Do I have supports in place if I find I’m having a tough time?
